Phelps also broke the Olympic record in the 200m butterfly with a time of 1:54.04 He also broke the Olympic record in the 200m individual medley with a time of 1:57.14 He done all of this while he was still a teenager.
- BEIJING - Michael’s goal for this Olympics: Swim for 8 Gold medals. He earned Gold #1 in the 400 individual medley as well as breaking his previous world record. In the 4x100 relay where Jason Lezak (anchor leg) came from behind on the French, helping Phelps win his gold #2. Michael Phelps once again broke his world record in the 200m freestyle race getting his gold #3. By then, Michael is the fifth Olympic athlete to win 9 gold medals. Michael won his gold #4 in his 200m butterfly as well as breaking the world record. Michael Phelps, with 10 gold medals, is the all-time leader with the most gold medals. He is also the first Olympian to win 3 butterfly titles. Phelp’s next race was swimming a leg in the 4x200 where the Americans were the first ones to break the 7 minute mark with the time of 6:58.56, Michael’s gold #5. Breaking another world record, Michael won the 200 individual medley - gold #6. Michael’s 7th gold was probably one of the most dramatic races. Beating Cavic by .01 of a second. Michael won his 8th gold medal on August 17, in the 4x100 medley with his teammates Hansen, Peirsol, and Lezak. At the end of the games Michael said, “Records are meant to be broken no matter what they are”
- LONDON - Michael’s first race wasn’t what how he wanted to start out, placing fourth in the 400 individual medley. Bouncing back, Michael won silver in the 200m butterfly. Michael finally won gold in London in the 200 individual medley - becoming the first male Olympian to win 3 Gold medals in the same event for 3 consecutive Olympics. Michael once again won 3 Golds in the same event in the 100m butterfly. Michael Phelps final Olympic event was in the 4x100 medley relay - winning his 18th career gold and 22nd overall. With 4 gold and 2 silver, Michael once again, is the most successful swimmer for the 3rd consecutive Olympics. Michael ended his Olympic career as the most decorated Olympian ever.
